Question
What is the situation regarding passports

Answer

From Channel 11 News - Passport Now Required To Enter Mexico (courtesy, La Paz Gringos)
Translation: The National Migration Institute (INM) reported that as of March first, citizens of Canada and the United States entering Mexico by air or sea must present their passport or valid passport card. They said that this measure will provide legal certainty and clarity to foreigners in their process within the country. This measure does not apply to those entering (by land) through the border or on board cruise ships.

New Migration Cards To Replace FM-2 and FM-3 Booklets (Courtesy Of Baja Pony Express) - In the following weeks, the National Migration Institute will publish the formats of the new migration cards that will replace the FM2 and FM3 booklets. Changes of activity, domicile, marital status, etc. will no longer have to be annotated on the migratory document, thereby allowing the foreign national the ability to travel in and out of the country while a change of status/conditions application is in process without having to request an exit and re-entry permit;

Consular Posts will no longer issue FM2 or FM3 booklets. Instead, the Consular Post will place a visa sticker on the foreign national’s passport, upon receipt of the petition’s approval from the National Migration institute. The sticker will allow entry into Mexico within 365 days of issuance. Upon entry, the foreign national must obtain the new FM2 or FM3 migration card within 30 days.

Hello, I'm trying to do a family tree on the Espinoza family. My great-grandfather was born in Todo Santos Baja Sur, he died in La Paz in 1984. How do I go about geting information of this sort in Baja Mexico?

Answer

I have been asked this question a couple of times. There are no computerized records you can access. It seems the only way is 'in person'. You would have to come to La Paz or Todos Santos and do it word of mouth.

Question

We are planning a trip to Todos Santos in early June.  We are planning
to fly there in a small plane and want to know if we can land at the
local airport.  We understand it's a military     field, but Guerrero
Negro is also and I have landed there several times.  If you don't know
the answer to this, perhaps you could give me some contacts (phone or
e-mail) for someone who might have the answer.  Also, if we can't land
there, we'll probably land at La Paz.  Do you know if they rent cars
there?  Thanks much, Gene

ANSWER

I am asked this question a lot. The airstrip is military. I am not aware of if accepting any international flights from privately owned small planes. There is not a permanent military presence in the town so we have no local permanent military contacts as far as I am aware. The only thing I can suggest is contacting the Military in Guerrero Negro. Sorry

Question

Could you tell me if it's possible to take a taxi from SJD airport to Todos Santos? Also what I >should expect to pay for it. Or are there transport >services other than the public bus? I'm traveling >with two small kids in the summertime for an extended stay and want to make the trip as painless as possible.

ANSWER
There are plenty of taxis for hire when you exit baggage claim/customs at the San Jose airport.  The price to Todos Santos would likely be in the $150 to $200 range and you should set the price before you take off.  The alternative is to take a taxi collectivo (about $12) to the San Jose bus station, then take the next bus to Todos Santos (about $8). Busses run until 9:00 PM, and it takes about 2 hours. The busses are usually clean and comfortable.  You can find a taxi colllectivo once you clear customs, just checkout the sales counters and ask for the taxi collectivo. All these folks speak English, and you can pay in dollars or pesos.

Question:

Can you give me any information regarding bus schedules in Baja

Answer

US SERVICE
From the US: Greyhound runs from Los Angeles and San Diego to Tijuana.

From Tijuana to Los Cabos: Three major bus companies, Autotransportes de Baja California (ABC), Transportes Aquila and Tres Estrelles de Oro provide efficient service on the peninsula with modern, clean, fast buses. The trip can be made in 24 hours. Call the Tijuana terminal for schedules and rates (from the US: 011-52 (664) 626-7101).

From Los Cabos International Airport to La Paz: Airport shuttles run the 10 miles regularly from the airport to San Jose del Cabo. They take bicycles on top. From San Jose there are 2 bus routes north to La Paz. The eastern route is shorter but the time is longer because it is mountainous and the bus makes as many stops as needed for passengers. The western route runs through Todos Santos on the Pacific side. Ten buses a day run 7:00 am to 8:00 pm.

From La Paz to Loreto: Three to six buses run daily. The trip takes 4.5 hours. Some buses are air conditioned, some have videos.

Peninsula is an executive class bus line serving La Paz Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo for more info and schedules 01152- 624-14- 35020

Whats Todos santos like in the summer?

Question:
We are considering moving to Todos Santos do you have any informatiion regarding schooling as we have two young children. Are there English speaking schools in the area?

Answer (courtesy of Francesca)
As far as I know, new residents can enroll their children in the public primeria or secundaria.  There is very little English taught in these settings and when it is taught, it is taught as a foreign language.  (not exactly what the kids who already speak English need)  I know of some families who do home schooling in English after their children come home from the primeria.  These programs can be bought from private companies or requested from school districts.  If you request the material from a school district you'll need to maintain an address in that disrtict, and use it in your coorespondence. These children have been very successful in both educational settings and become bilingual as well as biliterate.  I have been teaching for nine years in the state of California and have access to all state standards and curriculum.  I have a small home in Todos and I am willing to share my ideas and resources with any new residents.  If you want more information please feel free to contact me at lasirena_ts@hotmail.com  I will be looking into starting a small group this summer or fall.

Question

Hotel California

I write you because i need to know about the Hotel California in Todos Santos. I have heard the Eagles's song and some people tell me that this song talk about The Hotel California (in Todos Santos). One year ago i went to Todos Santos to investigate about this hotel, and some people from the town told me that The Doors were who lived what the song talk about and then they gave the song to the Eagles. After that I investigate with american people, who were in the Hotel California in Todos Santos, and they told me that the Eagle's song don't talk about this hotel, they told me that the letter of the song talk about a psychological hospital near Cabo San Lucas Where very important american people used to go. In fact, i need to know all about the relation between the Eagle's song(Hotel California) and the Hotel California in Todos Santos. Otherwise please tell me who can explain it.

Answer:
Travel writer Joe Cummings, personally contacted the Eagles and was told they had no connection at all with Hotel California in Todos Santos. All that you hear seems to be rumor with no substance at all in 'fact'. The only people who can tell what or where they were singing about are the Eagles. A bit like Santa Claus. We all know it is not true but its fun for some folk. And some have had many drinks bought from them on the strength of what they are supposed to know about this subject.

Question:

I am considering visiting Baja Sur in July or August because it is a quiet time but have been told it is to hot, buggy and dangerous. Is this correct?

ANSWER:
By dangerous we assume you are referring to the possibility of hurricanes? Other than that, we cannot imagine a safer place to be. The temperature in TS is usually at least ten degrees cooler than any other visitor destination in Baja Sur which makes it a prime spot . That said you have to be comfortable with temperatures in the mid 90s especially in August/September. It is true that the bugs also like the hot weather but they are no more abundant here than any other comparable place. Use a good repellent and there is always the beach!!! Enjoy your stay in the tranquility of TS in the summer.
